About the databases

Unless indicated as "On Campus Access Only" or "See a Librarian for Access" these resources are available from any internet connection.  Most databases will require you to enter your Minuteman Library card number for access outside the library.

For a few databases, home access is available only to Mount Ida College affiliated users.

360 Search 

360 Search searches two or more databases at the same time, enabling you to discover journal, magazine, and newspaper articles, books, dvds, and more in one search. Use 360 Search to help determine the best database for more in-depth searching.

 

Academic OneFile 

Academic Onefile contains 8,000 academic journals, the majority in full-text, available in HTML and PDF formats. In addition it contains hundreds of podcasts and transcripts from NPR, CNN, and the CBC, as well as full-text New York Times content from 1985.

America: History and Life 

America: History and Life covers the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. Contains concise abstracts of journal articles, citations of book/media reviews and dissertations, and coverage beyond history including culture, gender studies, psychology, literature, politics, and more.

Art Index 

Wilson Art Index provides comprehensive indexing of 377 international art publications, including English-language periodicals, yearbooks, and museum bulletins, as well as periodicals published in French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Dutch, and Swedish.

ARTstor 

ARTstor contains about 500,000 images of the visual arts throughout the world.

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals 

The Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals database offers a comprehensive listing of journal articles on architecture and design, including bibliographic descriptions on subjects such as the history and practice of architecture, landscape architecture, city planning, historic preservation, and interior design and decoration. It contains more than 440,000 thousand entries surveying over seven hundred American and international journals.

AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) 

The AVMA Web site contains a wealth of information on animal health issues and timely articles on animal-related public health concerns such as West Nile virus and avian influenza. Educators will find information and resources on the AVMA Web site to help encourage students to pursue careers as veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Founded in 1863, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is one of the largest and oldest not-for-profit associations for veterinarians in the world.

 

Biography Resource Center 

This database combines award-winning biographies from respected Gale Group sources. Biography Resource Center also includes full-text articles from hundreds of periodicals.  Search for people based on one or more personal facts such as birth and death year, nationality, ethnicity, occupation or gender, or combine criteria to create a highly-targeted custom search.  Also included in this resource is the the Complete Marquis Who's Who.  This massive database contains more than 990,000 thumbnail biographies from 20 respected Marquis sources.  Also includes Contemporary Authors.

Building Green 

Building Green is an independent publishing company committed to bringing our members accurate, unbiased, and timely green design information. BuildingGreen brings the best research, thinking, and writing to you through many publications, including Environmental Building News, the GreenSpec directory of green products, and the BuildingGreen Suite of online tools.

Business Source Premier 

This business research database, provides full-text for more than 2,300 journals including the world's top management and marketing journals. Business Source Premier covers all disciplines of business, including marketing, management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance and economics. Additional full text, non-journal content includes market research reports, industry reports, country reports, company profiles and SWOT analyses.

 

Conference Board Research Online Collection 

The Conference Board creates and disseminates knowledge about management and the marketplace to help businesses strengthen their performance and better serve society. The Conference Board is the world's most widely-quoted private source of management and economic intelligence. Contemporary Literary Criticism Select 

Contemporary Literary Criticism - Select (CLC-Select) is an extensive collection of critical essays on contemporary authors.  Each CLC-Select entry contains a biographical/critical introduction, listing of principal works, and sources for further study.

CQ Researcher

DAAI: Design and Applied Arts Index

Digital Media Catalog (OverDrive) 

The Digital Media Catalog (OverDrive) provides popular audiobooks, eBooks, music, and videos available for users to download.

 

E-brary 

The ebrary database includes more than 60,000 full-text electronic books and reports from more than 200 major academic publishers. The collections cover topics in business, computer science, economics, education, engineering, history, the humanities, and the social sciences. In addition to full-text search capabilities, ebrary provides advanced tools for creating a personal reading list, highlighting text, and making annotations.

Educator's Reference Complete 

A collection of more than 1,100 periodicals and 200 reports (most full-text) focusing on all levels of education, educational administration and policy.

Expanded Academic ASAP 

From arts and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology, this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines.  Access scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers - with full text and images!

First Research 

First Research is an industry survey style business database that breaks down the structure of an industry and its current challenges and opportunities. First Research provides up-to-date industry intelligence with insight and information of more than 600 industry segments. Highlights include prepared questions to gain an edge in interviews, vital web links and acronyms, and an "Industry Prospector" tool to locate industries that best fit your sales or marketing initiative.

FirstSearch is an online reference system that will help you access a wide range of resources to meet your information needs, including:  Electronic and traditional materials in library collections around the world; well-known reference databases; full-text and full-image documents from familiar databases, magazines, and electronic journals; and Web resources.

 

Gale Virtual Reference Library 

The Gale Virtual Reference Library is a database of encyclopedias, almanacs, and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research. Sources may be searched individually or together.

General BusinessFile ASAP 

Use this database to research all business and management topics. Includes directory listings for over 150,000 companies as well as investment analysts' reports on major companies and industries. Choose "Advanced search" and then type a ticker symbol into the pop-up box to search Reuters Research on Demand, which contains investment reports produced by financial institutions and Wall Street and International brokerage firms.

General OneFile 

General OneFile is a one-stop source for news and periodical articles, including most of the content across all Thomson/Gale databases. OneFile contains over 5,000 full-text periodical titles, and more than 9,200 titles in all, on a wide range of topics.

General Reference Center Gold 

Use this general interest database to search magazines, reference books, and newspapers for information on current events, popular culture, the arts and sciences, sports, etc.

GreenFILE 

GreenFILE offers well-researched information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more.

 

Health Reference Center Academic 

Use this database to find articles on: Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health & Safety, Alcohol and Drug Abuse, HMOs, Prescription Drugs, etc. The material contained in this database is intended for informational purposes only.

Hoovers 

Hoover's Online contains a wide variety of business information about public, private and non-U.S. companies, including extensive company profiles, information about competitors, and names and biographies of key people. Also available is company and industry news, IPO information, research reports, and annual reports. Company searches can be targeted using 18 parameters, including industry, location, financial information, company size, and company type. Searches can also screen stocks by up to 20 different criteria.

Hospitality and Tourism Complete 

Hospitality & Tourism Complete covers scholarly research and industry news in culinary arts, food & beverage management, hospitality law, hotel management, leisure & business travel, and market trends with full text for more than 200 publications, including periodicals, company & country reports, and books.

 

InformeDesign 

InformeDesign transforms research into an easy-to-read, easy-to-use format for architects, graphic designers, housing specialists, interior designers, landscape architects, urban designers and planners, and the public.

 

Junior Edition 

Designed for junior high and middle school students. Includes mainly full-text magazines, newspapers and reference books covering current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more.

 

Kids InfoBits 

Kids InfoBits targets the research needs of students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. It features a developmentally appropriate and visual graphic interface, a subject-based topic tree search and full-text, age-appropriate, curriculum-related magazine and reference content.

 

Lexi-Comp Online

Provides full text access to point-of-care information from 13 clinical databases and 4 clinical applications. Databases include Lexi-Drugs, Pediatric Lexi-Drugs, and Geriatric Lexi-Drugs as well as Clinician's Guides to Diagnosis, Internal Medicine and Laboratory Medicine. Clinical Applications include drug interactions, tablet & capsule identification, medical calculations and patient advisory leaflets.

Lexis-Nexis Academic provides access to a wide range of news, business, legal, and reference information. It includes full-text coverage of the New York Times, and Chronicle of Higher Education.

Literary Reference Center 

A full text database combining information from major respected reference works, books and literary journals, as well as original content from EBSCO Publishing, Literary Reference Center includes plot summaries, synopses and work overviews, articles/essays of literary criticism, author biographies, book reviews, classic and contemporary poems and short stories, author interviews, classic texts and much more.

LitFinder 

LitFinder's database includes five collections: Poems, Stories, Essays, Plays, and Speeches. These collections may be searched individually, as a group, or in any combination.

 

MADCAD 

MAD CAD is a state-of-the-art subscription based reference database online, containing building codes, knowledge-based design solutions and, guidelines to meet the codes. MAD CAD will provide you access to cross-referenced collections of building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fire, and maintenance codes from BOCA, SBCCI, ICBO, ICC, and NFPA. Full-text coverage of major Massachusetts newspapers including the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Quincy Patriot Ledger and the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, plus selected coverage of other regional sources.

MEDLINE with Full Text 

MEDLINE provides authoritative medical information on medicine,nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing with tree, tree hierarchy, subheadings and explosion capabilities to search citations from over 4,800 current biomedical journals.

MLA Directory of Periodicals 

Produced by the Modern Language Association of America (MLA), this directory lists periodicals in the areas of literature, language, linguistics, and folklore that are regularly indexed in the MLA International Bibliography. Includes editorial addresses, advertising and subscription rates, frequency, publisher, scope, information about submissions for publication, and much more for each title listed.

MLA International Bibliography 

The MLA International Bibliography consists of bibliographic records pertaining to literature, language, linguistics, and folklore, and includes coverage from 1963 to the present. The MLA International Bibliography provides access to scholarly research in over 3,000 journals and series. It also covers relevant monographs, working papers, proceedings, bibliographies, and other formats.

 

New York Times (1985-Current) 

This database includes the New York Times from January 1, 1985 to the present, including the New York Times Magazine and the New York Times Book Review.

NoveList 

NoveList is an electronic readers' advisory resource which assists fiction readers in finding new authors and titles.  Through its attractive and easy-to-use interface, NoveList allows readers to use a favorite author or title as a template to locate other authors and titles of interest.  Readers can also enter words that describe the contents of a book they would like to read, and NoveList retrieves titles that contain these words in the book's subject headings field.  In addition, users can browse over 1,200 theme-oriented book lists, 150 award lists and 1,000 fiction related web-sites.  NoveList contains materials for all ages including picture books, children's "chapter" books, young adult titles and books for adult readers. The product's database provides enhanced subject access to over 92,000 fiction titles.  Updated quarterly, the NoveList database integrates information from a variety of sources. 

 

Proquest Central 

This extensive online database provides one-stop access to more than 11,000 publications - with over 8,000 in full text. From primary scholarly journals, popular trade publications, company reports, and dissertations to newspapers, newsletters, and newswires - ProQuest Central provides global coverage of a wide range of disciplines. Over 160 subjects areas are covered extensively, including business and economics, health and medical, news and world affairs, technology, social sciences and more.

PsycARTICLES 

PsycARTICLES is an online database containing more than 27,500 full-text articles from 49 peer reviewed journals published by APA and allied organizations from 1988 to the present, with earlier years in production. The database covers general psychology and specialized basic, applied, clinical, and theoretical research in psychology.

PowerSearch 

Search multiple Thompson Gale databases at the same time

Gale PowerSearch is a platform unlike any other, providing libraries with a sophisticated, yet simple, solution for managing a wealth of periodical, reference and primary source information. Moreover, PowerSearch provides your patrons with access to all the Gale content in your library's collection through one, single search query.

Gale PowerSearch helps users select the databases most appropriate to include in a cross-search by providing an alphabetical listing along with a description of each one. Users search with the method that's easiest for them - by entering keywords, using pre-defined subject terms or constructing complex search queries using Boolean logic. Below the search term field, users will find a list of Gale databases so they can simply select as many databases as they want to include in their search. The database from which each document is found appears as part of the search results.

 

Qikan Library (DragonSource) 

Requires an MLN library card for both In Library and Remote Access

Access to over 100 full-text popular magazine publications from mainland China. Subjects include the arts, current events, business, health, children's literature and much more. Most titles viewable in both simplified and classical viewing styles. Coverage: 2005-present.

You may need to install a language pack to view Chinese characters; the database should prompt you if you need to do this.

 

Regional Business News 

Regional Business News incorporates 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires covering all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States.

 

Science Resource Center 

Infotrac's Science Resource Center provides topic overviews, experiments, biographies, pictures and illustrations, as well as articles from over 200 magazines and academic journals and links to quality web sites. The database covers curriculum-related science topics, and offers teachers an easy-to-use tool to identify content directly correlated to state and national standards.

Sports Business Research Network 

Find full-text articles on topics like the sporting goods industry, sports sponsorship and marketing, facilities, broadcasting and new media.

Student Edition 

This database is designed for high school students, with access to a variety of indexed and full-text magazines, newspapers and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more.

 

VetMedResource 

From CABI, this database covers all aspects of veterinary medicine and is aimed at practitioners and others working in animal health. It brings together the veterinary file of the CAB Abstracts Database, with the Animal Health and Production Compendium, and review articles and search aids. The abstracts database also includes enhanced linkage to full-text of original articles.
