Minuteman Library Network Internet Resources and Use Policy

In order to meet a wide variety of information needs, the libraries of the Minuteman Library Network (MLN) make information available in a variety of formats (including print, audiovisual, and electronic materials) and provide access to the information resources of the Internet via the Network's computer system.

Internet Resources

The Minuteman Massachusetts QuickFind resource and the Minuteman catalogue includes selected web sites that are primarily, but not exclusively, Massachusetts focused. It is meant to serve as a starting point for individual explorations. These sites are evaluated and selected by librarians, and meet the following guidelines:

  • DIVERSITY - Sites will be selected in a broad range of areas, representing a variety of viewpoints and reflecting the diversity of MLN communities and the interests of their members.
  • CONTENT - Sites must be information-rich, and the information must be of use to MLN patrons. Sites whose main purpose is commercial will not be included unless they provide significant useful information.
  • ACCESSIBILITY - The information provided by sites must be free. Sites which charge fees or have substantial, regular downtime will not be included.
  • ACCURACY AND AUTHORITY - MLN strives to include sites that contain accurate information and have a reputable provider.
  • CURRENCY - Sites must be updated regularly.

A link to a web site from MLN does not imply endorsement of the contents of that site, or of a particular point of view. There may be material that is offensive or disturbing to some individuals, or material that may be illegal. There may also be information that is neither accurate nor current. MLN assumes no liability for inaccurate or out-of-date information. Users may comment on or make suggestions about links. Users are also welcome to bring broken links and outdated and/or inaccurate material to the attention of the web master. MLN reserves the right to add or remove links at any time for any reason.

Internet Access

In accordance with the ALA Library Bill of Rights and a supplemental document entitled Access to Digital Information, Services, and Networks, MLN does not control or monitor access to material which may be accessible from other Internet sites. For information on children's access to the Internet, parents are encouraged to read Keeping Kids Safer on the Internet, produced by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Users are required to abide by the following guidelines for Internet use. It is not acceptable to use the Internet access at MLN computers for illegal or abusive purposes, including, but not limited to:

  • transmission of chain letters, broadcast letters, or any form of junk mail
  • transmission of threatening, obscene, or harassing materials
  • transmission of computer viruses
  • unauthorized access to local and remote computer systems

The Minuteman Library Network assumes no liability for any damage to user date or loss of user privacy sustained while using MLN computers.

Individual Minuteman libraries may have additional Internet policies and procedures in effect.
